I am a seasonal worker and my position as harvest supervisor at Burlington Berries has given me insight into how a good farm operates. From the beginning of my employment, Burlington has assisted with all aspects of my relocation to work in Tasmania. From housing to visa advice, the business helps to ensure that all its workers are integrated well not only into Burlington, but also into our homes and communities.
When I was given the opportunity for employment at Burlington Berries, my initial transition from East Timor was smooth; the management and staff went above and beyond to ensure safety and stable work. Initially my position at Burlington was as a picker where I was taught how to work efficiently and carefully to ensure the quality of harvested berries. Recently, I have progressed to a supervisory role. This entails managing a picking team throughout the summer season. The change in roles has not only been a great opportunity but has resulted in learning valuable skills, such as management responsibilities, better communication and improved language skills.
The diversity in the team is the highlight for working at a place like Burlington. Due to the seasonal workers program and PALMS, you get to meet, work and live with so many new and interesting people. I currently live in a residence with pickers from Timor, and the opportunity to learn about my housemates’ and teams’ different cultures, practices and way of life is a privilege.
The setting of the farm is also another advantage to working at Burlington Berries. It is always alive with people, from the pickers in the tunnel to the line workers in the packhouse. The natural beauty of Tasmania surrounds the farm and every day you work in plain view of the Northern Midlands fields and the pristine mountain ranges that surround Cressy.
I will always recommend Burlington as a great place to work. I really enjoy my position and if asked, I am always happy to say that I would work here season after season. The team, management and workplace culture have changed my life and given me opportunities that I will always value.
Burlington Berries was established in Tasmania in 2012. Originally from NSW where the Sutherland family has farmed for generations, Kate and Stewart purchased Burlington Farm in 2010 as a location for their premium pasture seed business Upper Murray Seeds. In 2012 they joined with long term friends and 50% business partners Marion and Jon Regan and they established Burlington Berries. The next generation of Sutherlands now call Tasmania home, working alongside their parents to deliver a ‘Better Berry’ for all Australians to enjoy.
